by Al Robertson – President
Highlights for 2019 include:
- The club changed its constitution as a requirement of new WA legislation relating to rules for incorporated clubs.
- A new course was installed by Recreation Activity Design on the campus of Shenton College secondary school. The course is only 7km from Perth CBD and is easily accessible via train using public transport. It is available to the general public outside of school hours (i.e. not between 8:00am – 4:00pm on school days). Since its installation in September 2019 it has been very popular with golfers.
- PDGC donated to the WA members of the Australian World’s Team.
Throughout 2019 the Perth Disc Golf Club runs many events, these are described below:
Perth Disc Golf Club League @ Cockman Park (Rob Hancock Memorial Disc Golf Course)
The first Sunday of every month March till December our club league day is held. With the increasing number of people attending the TD manages two tee times which gives players more flexibility to choose their preferred time. This has also helped with reducing waiting on the course during play. This league is managed by TD Al Robertson with Rick Penlington maintaining and publishing the scores. This event attracts an average of twenty-five to thirty-five people per round.
Perth Disc Golf Club runs an ace pot for club members on the league day, jack potting each month. This ace pot had not been won so far this year. In addition, the club would like to thank our major sponsor Sportspower Kingsway for supporting the club with a $50 voucher for each of our league day winners.
Spearwood League @McFaull Park Spearwood
This is the second year of the south of the river league held monthly at the course in the suburb of Spearwood. This league regularly attracts 20 players per month. Another ace pot is available for this league, but it has not been won in the two years of this league. The club wishes to thank The Frisbee Shop for sponsoring this event with a $20 voucher for each month’s winner. The TD for this event is Michael Canci.
Rocky Rumble @ Fantasy Park golf course in Waikiki
This new event was created TD by Karl Voloczi.
The first event of the year saw Rocky
Rumble take place at Fantasy Park. This
event was put forward to celebrate the number of different social groups and
gangs that have organically sprung up in recent years (and not so recent – I’m
looking at you 78s). The event hosted 59
participants, spread (a little unevenly) over 8 different gangs. There were
some challenges on the day; namely, the number of participants and the weather.
However, with the help of numerous supporters, the day ran quite smoothly. The
event was a sanctioned PDGA event that used raw scores and gang affiliations to
generate team scores.
Lord of the Disc @Cockman Park (Rob Hancock Memorial Disc Golf Course)
This is a fun event run by the club to encourage people to come and have a throw and test their disc control. This event that 27 holes over three rounds with one round during the day followed by two in the dark. Competitors are only allowed to use one disc for all three rounds. This event attracted forty competitors and the tournament TD was Jacob Stanley.
Rob Hancock Memorial Event @Cockman Park (Rob Hancock Memorial Disc Golf Course)
This event is a PDGA rated event. This event has deep meaning and gives people the opportunity to learn about the history of disc golf in Perth and about the man who played a major role in developing it as a sport in Perth. The Hancock family attended and presented trophies to the winners. This year the event TD was Jacob Stanley.
Perth Chick Flick @Curtin University Bentley
This is also a PDGA rated event which runs as part of the women’s global event. This is to encourage women in disc golf but is not restricted to female entries. It attracted 41 players this year of which 9 were women, the TD was Karl Voloczi.
Perth Open Disc Golf Championship @Pine Lines Gidgegannup
This PDGA rated event is one of the most popular events held in Perth. Once again competitors were able to camp on the course’s property for the duration of the event. This is the only Perth Disc Golf Club event that runs for more than a day and is on one of the most challenging courses in Perth. This year 62 players competed with some interstate players attending (and winning). This year’s TD was Karl Voloczi.
Alexander Heights Unplugged @Alexander Height Disc Golf Course
This PDGA sanctioned event is a no-frills low-cost tournament made up of 2 rounds of 18 holes. Good for anyone who just wants another chance to improve their PDGA ratings. Created by TD Karl Voloczi.
Kim Holmes Trophy @ Mundaring Disc Golf Course
This is a fun tournament between teams of players from the Perth Disc Golf Club and Mundaring Disc Golf Clubs competing against each other over three rounds. Each round is a different format and the winning club is the one with the most points over the three rounds. This year’s event was hosted by the Mundaring Club but was won by PDGC.
W.A. Doubles Championship
This doubles event is a bit of fun
with all divisions getting a chance to play with better players. This event is
not PDGA rated but is a good chance for people to be able to watch, play and
learn from more skilled players. This year’s TD is Al Robertson.
Community events and group support
Perth Disc Golf Club also gets involved in assorted community events and school programs to help spread the word and grow disc golf as a sport as well as providing support to others that wish to run a disc golf program in any other capacity.
