On Saturday the 13th of March, forty-nine intrepid adventurers descended upon the Rob Hancock course in Greenwood with one disc in hand and a gleam in their eye.  They came to claim their crown as a Lord or Lady of the Disc, and a “preciousssssss few” of this hardy band were successfully crowned.

The Lord Of The Disc tournament has become a mainstay of the PDGC Calendar each year, I think for a couple of reasons: 1.  It’s a simple fun format, and 2.  It’s excellent fun throwing discs at night towards some crazily decorated baskets.

Beginner disc golfers are the main focus for this event, so it was wonderful to see eight Mens and Womens Novice players get involved for the eighteen daylight holes and eighteen night holes.  The weather was also a pleasant surprise, being quite warm and with a slight breeze there was no rain in sight which was a welcome change.

The day round saw some excellent scores posted with Alex Kynaston shooting the hot round of 51 (with one disc?), opening up a four stroke lead on Jordy Wheeler and Chris Van Maanen on 55 in the Open division.  In Advanced, Dave Briggs threw 56 to take a slender lead over John Monk on 57.  In Womens Advanced both Sue Summers and Claire Batey threw 67 with Jo McCamish carding a 70 to stay within striking distance.  In Mens Intermediate, Connor Donnelly threw a very clean 59 to open up a two stroke lead on Sean Dobbs with a 61.  In Mens Novice Ashley Day carded a 70 with Christopher Williams nipping at his heels on 71, Megan O’Reilly scored a solid 81 in Womens Novice and Ken Summers led the Masters field with a hot 56, opening up a four stroke lead on Del Batey and Kingsley Flett with 60s apiece.

However, the night round can see some massive swings on the leaderboard because night disc golf is almost a different game.  Lines appear at night where there is none during the day, there’s some debate whether during the day we are “scared off” some lines due to the visual risks where at night players seem to make the smallest of gaps.  One of the coolest things about this tournament is the Adopt-A-Basket competition which sees players decorate their adopted hole with lights, music, sounds and decorations.  This year we had six holes adopted and they added a lot of interest in the darkness.  We had tee pads with projected pictures on them, a dragons treasure hoard with gold pieces and trinkets filling one basket and a celebratory tune playing upon a disc hitting the chains on another hole.  Fantastic job to everyone that adopted a hole, hopefully next year we can get all nine holes adopted with some even more amazing concepts.

After a break for dinner, the players headed back to the eerie course in the darkness, armed with torches, LED lights stuck firmly to discs and even some glow discs and glow chargers being used.

In the Mens Open, it was Jordy using his cat-like night vision to throw the hot round of 52 in the darkness for a total of 107, reeling in Alex who threw a 109.  In Mens Advanced, John Monk threw another 57 to Dave Briggs’ 58 resulting in a tie for first place, so the blokes hit the course for a sudden death tie-breaker, John Monk emerged victorious after Hole 1 with John able to putt in for 2 whereas Big Rig missed the birdie putt due to a grass tree getting in his line.  In Womens Advanced, Claire threw one better than her day round 67 to post a 66 for a total 133, with Jo McCamish throwing another 70 to leapfrog Sue into second place.  In Mens Intermediate, Connor posted a 60 in his second round to total 119, with Ian Von Dresselt grabbing 2nd place with a 124.  In Mens Novice, Ashley posted a night round 72 to post a total of 142 to Trent Caldwell’s 143 with Christopher Williams finishing third on 144, two strokes separating the top three players.  Megan O’Reilly improved by three strokes on her day round, posting a second round 78 for a 159 total, and in the Mens Masters Ken threw a 61 to post a 117 total score, with Del taking out second place with a total 123.

Once the second round was finished, players voted for their favourite Adopt A Basket hole, and Ken and Sue were the winners with their “Dragons Treasure Hoard” complete with real treasure, a fiery red glow and ominous music setting the atmosphere.  All of the Adopt A Basket entrants looked fantastic, a massive thanks to the following people for wowing us all with their fantastic concepts:

Hole 1: Joker (Jonathan King)

Hole 2: Golden Frolfin’ Turkeys

Hole 4: Disc Connection (Reece Vellios)

Hole 5: Sue and Ken Summers

Hole 6: Kiwi

Hole 9: The Rocky-Mandurah Crabs (Kingsley Flett)

A massive thanks to our wonderful sponsors, Vanessa and Sean from Disc Golf Warehouse and all the folk at RPM Discs for your support, as well as a big thanks to Rob Cinquini for supplying a portable toilet for the event.  Also to all the people that helped me with the setup, running of the tournament and pack up, I couldn’t run events without you all chipping in to help out, its much appreciated for every little thing you jump in and look after for our TD team.  Many hands make light work, and you guys and gals make everything so much easier, its massively appreciated.

To all the players (especially you first time tournament players), thanks so much for your support of this and all other PDGC events.  Without you all, we wouldn’t have the vibrant scene we enjoy so much.  Massive congratulations to the winners of each division, and thanks for your patience while your trophies travelled 53,719km to get to you, it took quite a while.  See you all next year for another instalment of Lord Of The Disc!
